What to see and do
Wulingyuan & Yuanjiajie
More than three thousand sandstone pillars rise from the forest floor; the Qiankun Pillar and the 'Number One Bridge Under Heaven' are the most overwhelming stretch.
Tip Enter at the Wulingyuan gate and ride the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie; the first buses beat the groups, and pillars emerge one by one as the mist clears.
Cost Park from CNY 227 (4 days) + elevator CNY 65
Tianmen Mountain & glass walkway
One of the world's longest cableways runs from the city centre up to Heaven's Gate, and the glass walkway clings to a vertical cliff at the top.
Tip Book the cableway and ticket ahead with a time slot; the glass walk uses rented shoe covers — if you fear heights, the ordinary path has the same view.
Cost Cableway + ticket CNY 278
Golden Whip Stream hike
A seven-kilometre trail along the valley floor, with pillars on both sides and forest and water throughout — the easiest and coolest walk in the park.
Tip About 2 hours from the Oxygen Bar square to Water Winding Around Four Gates, with shuttle buses at both ends; wear grippy shoes in the rainy season.
Cost Included in the park ticket
Baofeng Lake & Yellow Dragon Cave
A lake cupped between cliffs, and a cave system with ten-thousand-year stalactites and an underground river — the area's other kind of landscape.
Tip The boat trip on Baofeng Lake takes about 40 minutes; Yellow Dragon Cave has many steps, so skip it if stairs are difficult.
Cost Lake CNY 96 / Cave CNY 100

-

Sticky-rice blood cake braised with duck — western Hunan flavour
-
Mushroom stew / sour fermented fish
Wild mountain mushrooms, and fish fermented with chilli and rice
Common questions
One ticket for the whole park, or one for each day?
One purchase covers four consecutive days and includes the shuttle buses, with face recognition at the gate — but the days are not interchangeable. On each morning you intend to go in, the city's official mini program issues a fresh timed entry, and it must name the same gate you actually walk up to. The CNY 227 is the ticket; the reservations are the daily ritual.
What is the hardest ticket in Zhangjiajie?
Tianmen Mountain, no contest: its named time slots appear at 07:00 exactly seven days out, and in peak season the morning ones go within the hour. The park and the glass bridge at the Grand Canyon keep their own clocks on top of that — three separate systems, three separate bookings, so do not assume one reservation covers the day.
Booking & tickets
🏔️ Wulingyuan / Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
One 4-day ticket (CNY 227 including the shuttle buses) with real-name face-scan entry — but each extra entry day needs its own timed reservation, at the same gate you booked.
What you need to know
- The ticket is valid 4 consecutive days with multiple entries and shuttle buses included; the Bailong elevator and cableways are ticketed separately
- Every entry day needs a timed reservation in the official 「张家界一机游」 mini program, and the reserved gate must match the gate you enter — no crossing between gates
- Book 2–3 days ahead normally (4+ for weekends); national holidays cap at about 53,000 visitors/day — book as soon as the window opens
- Children under 14 and seniors 65+ enter free with documents; ages 60–64 and students get half price

🚡 Tianmen Mountain
The hardest ticket in Zhangjiajie: real-name timed slots, released 7 days ahead at 07:00 — peak-season morning slots sell out in about an hour.
What you need to know
- Tickets 278–288 yuan including insurance; routes A/B/C differ only in ascent/descent order — during the cableway upgrade, the classic city-to-summit ride stops at the mid-station for shuttle + escalators
- Book in the official mini program at 07:00 sharp, 7 days ahead; holiday A-line morning slots vanish within the hour — C-line (fast cableway both ways) sells out last
- Single-day validity: arrive in your slot; ticketing stops 16:00 and the last cableway down is 17:00 — plan to descend by 15:00 in high season
- No date changes; cancellation costs 30 yuan (2+ days ahead) or 60 yuan (same day); the glass walkway needs a 5-yuan shoe cover on site
How to book
-
「张家界一机游」 mini program / 「张家界天门山景区」 official account
Passport accepted
Timed-slot booking; passport holders use windows if the online form needs a Chinese ID

ℹ️ Zhangjiajie: General Booking Rules
Three scenic areas, three ticket systems — the Grand Canyon glass bridge is a third real-name timed booking.
What you need to know
- The Grand Canyon glass bridge (Route B, 178 yuan with the canyon) is also real-name timed — book about 3 days ahead; morning slots have the best light
- Everything runs on Chinese ID infrastructure: when a system rejects a passport number, the official windows at all three scenic areas accept your original passport
- Never buy "discount" tickets from station touts — official prices are fixed and real-name checks make resold tickets useless
- Mountain weather stops cableways without notice; keep half a day of slack and check the 一机游 announcements before riding
